The Welsh Carp Masters Championship
I recently went to the Welsh Carp masters competition at Celtic Lakes near Lampeter. This venue which has only recently opened two year ago seems to forfill the demand of the organisers for this the first Welsh Carp Masters Championship.

Although the 50 anglers who qualified and fished as pairs were at times critical of the organisers. It seems that there were too many rods fishing on the main lake. Of course a lot depended on what peg you drew. In many instances casting was very limited. The winners came from middle to the neck end of the lake.
I have to say on seeing these carp boys, oh there was one lady teamed up with her partner, I have a deep respect for them. Fishing not stop for 40 hours, well they have a break for the loo , food and drink. Bed is only a few feet away so they can have a kip and rely on the elecronic line bleeper.
Ther tackle is quite amazing. They are only allowed three rods, one seems to used for sending a massive torpedo bait device that cast a distance and releases the bait. The rod can also be used for finding the depth of water where they want to fish.
The tackle and various floats weights, hooks are all organised into easy to use compartments of theirtackle boxed. Bait was something that is a very closley guarded secret. the smell was like cooking old socks.

The site resembled an outdoor hotel. On one side the walkway was covered in wood chippings the other side very muddy. In fact some of the bivi's has to be erected on the far side of the track.
Accommodation was basic, although all modern comforts known to man was available.Beds inside the bivi, tables chairs, cookers, coolboxes and food. The smell of fried bacon drifted around, or how about curry for breakfast ?. You name it they had it.
Saturday was also the Welsh rugby match in the world cup. So out comes the telly or radio.
As I walked around the pegs I was kept well informed as to the match results. I witnesed some excellent carp coming out. I was told that in the lake there are cat fish to 60 lb !!how on earth can the carp avoid being cannon fodder the them !!.
One thing was very clear all these guys take carp fishing very seriously. Time and money is spent with the
carp pastime. Some of them told me there marriage suffered because of the time spent carp fishing. As one angler put it; we fish every weekend and every spare time is devoted to fishing.
I take my hat off to them,

''they are a very special breed of anglers''.

Game Fishing

It has been a better month now the weather has cooled down.' Ah' you might ask it has been cool all summer!!, true but water temperature governs the behaviour of fish. I recently fished for Salmon and sewin in West wales where water temperature, colour and hight of water was critical to catch.
