NEWPORT’S Gary Buckland retained his British super-featherweight title on a night when Ricky Hatton’s comeback ended in tears.
St Josephs champ Buckland triumphed on a huge night of boxing at the Manchester Arena when opponent Stephen Foster was pulled out by his corner at the end of round eight after sustaining a bad cut to the top of his head.
In a generally even bout, Foster began to bleed heavily from an accidental head clash in the sixth, and after the close attention of the doctor it became clear the Mancunian was going to be unable to continue.
In the main event Hatton lost his comeback fight against Vyacheslav Senchenko with a ninth round stoppage.
Also on the undercard Martin Murray set up a second world middleweight title shot in the new year after stopping Venezuela’s Jorge Navarro to retain his interim WBA belt.
And reigning British champion Scott Quigg knocked down veteran Rendall Munroe twice in the sixth round to extend his unbeaten record to 26 fights and win the WBA interim super-bantamweight title.
