ST JOSEPH'S fighter Mitchell Buckland won the battle of the Newport boxers against Alway's Craig Woodruff to claim the Celtic lightweight title.

Buckland, younger brother of former British super-featherweight champion Gary, is setting his sights on a British title of his own after taking the verdict 100-92, 97-94, 98-94 on the judges' scorecards.

There were also victories for Jerome Samuels, Frankie Borg, Craig Kennedy and Danni Griffiths at the Newport Centre but Cardiff's Peter Ashton lost to debutant Thomas Jarvis.
