ST Joseph’s boxers enjoyed a mixed few days as Robbie Turley produced a sparkling display to win his British title eliminator but Gary Buckland and Frankie Borg suffered defeats, writes Andrew Penman.

Cefn Fforest’s Turley set himself up for a crack at the British super-bantamweight belt as he won every round against Devon’s Jamie Speight in Bristol on Friday night.

The three ringside judges reflected Turley’s dominance as they scored the fight 100-90, 100-91 and 100-91 in favour of the Welshman at the City Academy.

The British belt is currently vacant but it’s scheduled to be fought for between Josh Wale and Liverpool’s James Dickens in the New Year and Turley has put himself in pole position to fight the winner.

But there was disappointment for Turley’s St Joes stablemate Borg on the same Sanigar Events show.

Coming into the fight with only ten hours notice, Swansea’s Chris Ware upset Borg, who had not fought since winning the Welsh middleweight title against Kerry Hope in March.

Ware, trained by John Kaighin and managed by Cwmbran’s Gary Lockett, scored heavy knockdowns in the first and fourth rounds which saw him edge Jeff Hinds’ card, courtesy of a 39-36 score.

As it was only scheduled for four rounds, Borg’s Welsh middleweight championship wasn’t on the line but a rematch with Ware for the title could be on the cards.

Buckland, who like Turley and Borg trains at St Joes in Newport with Tony Borg, failed in his attempt to win the Prizefighter tournament for a second time.

The 28-year-old won the super-featherweight version in 2010 but he was beaten in the semi-final by Jono Carroll in the lightweight edition on Saturday.

Buckland enjoyed a unanimous points win over Floyd Moore in the quarter-final at London’s York Hall but lost a split decision to Carroll in the semi.

The loss is a big blow to Buckland who told the Argus that the tournament was a ‘must-win’ having suffered three defeats in the four fights before the weekend.

He will now set his sights on regaining the British super-featherweight belt he lost to Stephen Smith in August 2013.
