CEFN Fforest boxer Robbie Turley believes 2015 will be the year he finally gets his hands on a British title belt, writes Andrew Penman.

Turley, who trains at St Joseph’s gym in Newport with Tony Borg, set himself up for a crack at the British super-bantamweight crown by winning every round of his title eliminator against Devon’s Jamie Speight.

The three ringside judges reflected Turley’s dominance as they scored the fight 100-90, 100-91 and 100-91 in favour of the Welshman at the City Academy in Bristol last Friday.

The British belt is currently vacant but it’s scheduled to be fought for between Josh Wale and Liverpool’s James Dickens in the New Year and Turley has put himself in pole position to fight the winner.

“I always promised myself as a kid that I’d win the British title one day and next year could be the year,” said Turley.

“Josh and James are fighting at the end of January I think so hopefully I can get a crack at the winner in March or April.

“I’ll probably need a six-rounder or eight-rounder before then to keep me sharp but to know that I could be one fight away from going for the title is brilliant.”

Turley’s superb display against Speight was his best display since he took Carl Frampton the distance in June 2011.

Since then Frampton has gone one to become a star and currently holds the IBF world super-bantamweight title.

Turley was forced to put his career on hold for two year due to complications with a routine brain scan and only returned to the ring in March this year.

After two wins he was well beaten by Dai Davies for the Welsh featherweight title in July but he never had any doubt that he could get back to the top at super-bantamweight.

“It was a great performance against Speight, probably better than I boxed against Frampton,” said the 28-year-old.

“I put the loss behind me and felt really strong at the weight.

“I’ve been sparring with Gary Buckland, Frankie Borg and Craig Evans at St Joes and I’ve felt good.

“It was just about doing it on the night and thankfully I did that and I’m really pleased.

“It’s a great way to end the year and means I can enjoy Christmas and look forward to an exciting 2015.”
