WALES’ greatest boxer Joe Calzaghe is likely to be full of Christmas cheer after receiving a double honour.

The former two-weight, undefeated world champion, who retired in 2009, is set to be honoured by the WBC, one of the governing bodies of the sport and whose super middleweight title Calzaghe, before going on to unify the entire division by beating Mikkel Kessler.

He is a guest of honour this weekend at the WBO convention in Las Vegas, Nevada, scene of his victory over Bernard Hopkins in 2008, the fight that finally gave Calzaghe recognition in the US.

Last year, the USA boxing writers’ association made Calzaghe a first ballot Hall of Fame entrant and this year he will receive a special commemorative belt, an honour bestowed on just a handful of fighters, including the legendary Muhammad Ali.

“It’s great to be going back out to America and to Vegas, I have lovely memories of going there to fight for the first time,” Calzaghe explained to Argus Sport.

“The entry into the Hall of Fame last year was one of the greatest honours of my entire life and this is another nice honour to receive.

“I am also looking forward to seeing some familiar faces from inside the sport, because I’ve been retired five-years now and you don’t see people so often.”

And that’s not the only boost for Calzaghe, who has also made his way into the Guinness Book of World Records to commemorate their 60-years as an organisation.

Guinness World Records has honoured outstanding athletes from across the sports landscape with an exclusive 60th anniversary certificate and medal, in recognition of the fantastic achievements throughout the glittering careers which have earned them their GWR title.

Amongst the sportsmen and women included in the celebrations is boxing legend Calzaghe, who on announcing his Guinness World Records title for First Boxer to win all four major super middleweight titles, said: "I’ve been a big fan of Guinness World Records since I was a boy, so I'm delighted to be included in their 60th anniversary celebrations. I'm extremely proud of what I was able to achieve in my Boxing career and to be recognised alongside so many other greats feels very special."

Other stars honoured by GWR include Usain Bolt (Fastest 100m Sprint), Paula Radcliffe (Fastest Marathon, Female), Sir Steve Redgrave (Most Olympic rowing gold medals), Mo Farah (Most European Athletics Championships 5,000 metres gold medals), Linford Christie (Fastest men’s indoor 4x200 metres relay), Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar (Most test matches in a career, Most centuries scored in international cricket, Most runs scored in an international career) and Tennis player Sabine Lisicki (Fastest tennis serve by a woman).
