THERE was plenty of success for Gwent fighters at the Welsh Elite Championships, writes Michael Pearlman.

In a repeat of last year’s heavyweight (91KG) final, Lions Den’s Kody Davies, from Blackwood, won his second senior title with a two round victory over Pontypool’s David Walker.

Walker was cut in the second round after a right hook following a clash of heads caused the heavy bleed forced the ringside doctor to end the bout with concerns over Walker’s left eye and Davies in control.

Kody, who represented Wales at Commonwealth Games, has recently had the honour of working with Joe Calzaghe, a family friend, as the legendary boxer ponders whether he fancies a future career following in his father Enzo’s footsteps.

In the only female contest in the competition, staged at Sophia Gardens, Chepstow’s Rosie Eccles needed less than two minutes to record a comprehensive victory over Natasha Williams in the light-welterweight category.

In the welterweight (69kg) category, Pontypool’s Kieran Gething came up against Gwent ABC fighter Sonny Lee, with the Pontypool man able to take a unanimous decision.

Gething, who was cornered by former Welsh Area light-heavyweight champion Jeff Evans, a former pro fighter with world title contender Gary Lockett, was more comfortable with the pace.

Lee struggled to live with Gething’s relentless style and was deducted two points for trying to restrict his punching. However, less experienced than his opponent, Lee dug in bravely and survived a late standing count.

Prizefighter’s light-heavyweight (81KG) Calum Evans saw off Pantside’s Nethan Nichols to claim his first senior title in a real tear up.

This one was star-studded by association, Evans, nephew of former Welsh boxer Kevin Evans, and Nichols, who is trained by former world champion Gavin Rees both impressing with Evans just shading the points decision.
