BRITAIN’S greatest ever boxing trainer Enzo Calzaghe would love to see his friend Freddie Roach inspire Manny Pacquiao to victory in the sport’s most lucrative ever fight on Saturday, but doesn’t believe it will happen.

Calzaghe, who trained son Joe throughout his unblemished professional career, admits that while his heart says Pacquiao his head says Floyd Mayweather ahead of the fight that the whole world is talking about.

However, Calzaghe, the most decorated boxing trainer Britain has produced, believes Mayweather is overrated, despite being undefeated and believes he isn’t the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. And unsurprisingly, he has little time for the arguments that Mayweather compares to the all-time greats of the sport.

Calzaghe considers Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach to be among his friends in the sport, the duo memorably clashing in 2008 when Calzaghe was victorious against Bernard Hopkins.

However, Calzaghe believes wear and tear on Pacquiao, combined with Mayweather’s ‘don’t lose,’ style, will ensure the American takes the spoils in Las Vegas.

“It is a case of heart versus head for me, I want Manny to win, I want Freddie Roach to win and get his tactics 100% spot-on, but I don’t believe that can happen, my brain says it won’t,” he told Argus Sport.

“It is not about Mayweather being too good, it’s about the styles of the fighters and I don’t see, logically, how Pacquiao wins.

“But I want to be wrong.”

Calzaghe had strong words for Mayweather, the 47-fight undefeated champion who many believe to be the top boxer in the world, Joe Calzaghe included.

“I don’t take issue with Floyd personally, I met him at an awards ceremony in America and he came across well, he was personable and respectful and I enjoyed his company.

“All the ‘Money’ stuff, the character he plays to promote fights, it doesn’t bother me at all.

“But the bottom line is that Mayweather is boring. He’s a boring fighter, a step-back, defend, defend, step-back and defend again sort of a boxer, who worries only about his defence.

“I find it surprising people pay to watch the guy. He’s not the best pound-for-pound boxer in the world and he’s not the greatest of his generation. He’s too boring to be those things.”

Despite not liking the way Mayweather fights, Calzaghe gives him the edge on Saturday and thinks he might even record a rare stoppage victory, his first since stopping Victor Ortiz in 2011.

“I have a feeling that Mayweather will catch Pacquiao with a big cross right somewhere deep into the fight, maybe rounds nine or ten,” he said.

“Manny has been hurt a couple of times in the last few years and leaves himself vulnerable and I see him getting caught and going down.”

However, even if the contest is settled by the judges’ scorecards, as many pundits think it will, Calzaghe believes Mayweather will still find a way to win.

“I don’t expect him to be the busier fighter, so if it goes to points, it is almost bound to be controversial,” he explained.

“Because America needs Floyd Mayweather he’s sporting royalty over there and he’s the house fighter. I see him getting it on points if it comes to that.

“Mayweather has nothing left if he loses, nothing. His legacy will be shot. He’s all about the undefeated record, because he isn’t entertaining. Without that record, he’s just a defensive boxer who won a lot of big fights people didn’t really enjoy watching.”
