FORMER British featherweight boxing champion Steve Sims got on his bike for charity this week as he took part in the ‘Tour de Port’ event in Newport.

Sims, who now trains amateur and professional hopefuls at his Alway gym, took part in the cycling event at HSBC Bank in Bridge Street.

The Tour De Port mirrors the Tour de Yorkshire that is taking place over the weekend and involves bank staff and special guests cycling in the branch to raise money for national charity Crohns & Colitis UK.

Sims got his cycling gear on on Wednesday, local firefighters took their turn on Thursday and a Newport dance troupe and rapper will help out today.

Crohn's and Colitis UK aims to improve life for everyone affected by Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) – the main forms being Crohn's Disease and Ulcerative Colitis.

Collections are being taken in the branch but donations can also be made direct to the charity.

World IBD day is on Tuesday, May 19. For more information visit crohnsandcolitis.org.uk, call 01727 734485 or email fundraising@crohnsandcolitis.org.uk.

Meanwhile, Sims is also busy preparing for a special boxing show hosted by Alway ABC at St Patrick’s Social Club, Cromwell Road, Newport, tonight.

The main attraction will be a sparring bout between Joey Newell and Gerald Waters.

Also in action will be Ashley Sims, Craig Bishop, Clayton Cook, Ethan Shellam and Joe and Tom Teenham.

The doors open at 6pm and the first bell is at 7.30pm. Entry costs £10 and food and drink will be available.
