CEFN Fforest fighter Nathan Cleverly will attempt to Razzle Dazzle in America for the third time in October when he makes his debut in Chicago.

The Argus can reveal that Cleverly, who is bidding to become a two-time world champion after returning to the light heavyweight division, will fight dangerous opponent Andrzei Fonfara, with the bout likely to be confirmed within 24 hours for October 16 in the Windy City.

Cleverly’s promoter, Matchroom Sport’s Eddie Hearn announced that Cleverly would fight in the States two months ago, but it has taken this long to agree the finer details, with the fight set to take place as part of Al Haymon’s Premier Boxing Champions series. Haymon has recently been featuring several Matchroom fighters and recently agreed a co-promotion deal to put on Lee Selby fights in the US.

Cleverly has already returned to full training in anticipation of the Fonfara battle and has also been sparring.

Cleverly told Boxingwales.com: “I’ve got the fight in my mind now. I’m training hard, ready for the fight in October. We were waiting for a venue and official date but I’ve got a rough idea, that’s fine for me. I’m bang on it for this fight and I’m very focused.”

Matchroom Sport have confirmed to the Argus that they expect the bout to be announced shortly.

Fonfara will be Cleverly’s third opponent faced in the USA.

On his first trip to America in 2008, Cleverly recorded his 12th win by securing every round against Antonio Baker in Las Vegas on the undercard of Joe Calzaghe’s super fight with Bernard Hopkins. He returned in 2012, taking eight rounds to stop Shawn Hawk at Los Angeles’ Staples Centre in a late notice defence of his WBO light heavyweight title.

Fonfara, though Polish by birth is based in America and specifically Chicago, so he should enjoy home field advantage.
