ST JOSEPH’S boxer Robbie Turley is considering his future in the fight game after becoming increasingly frustrated at the lack of opportunities to fight for major titles, writes Andrew Penman.

The 28-year-old former Welsh and Celtic super-bantamweight champion returned to the ring in 2014 after a two-year enforced absence.

A routine brain scan in 2012 had found a microscopic amount of blood on a pineal cyst in his brain.

That caused the British Boxing Board of Control to take action but neurosurgeons insisted there was no risk to his health and he came back desperate to get a shot at a British title.

Turley lost a Welsh featherweight title bout to Dai Davies in July last year but won a British super-bantamweight title eliminator against Jamie Speight in December.

That came to nothing and an exciting clash with Panamanian former WBA bantamweight world champion Anselmo Moreno in March also collapsed at the last minute.

Turley won a four-round super-bantamweight contest against Frenchman Jean Noel Alvarez at the Newport Centre last week and says the top British fighters will not face him.

“Everything is frustrating for me at the moment as far as boxing is concerned,” he said.

“I can’t get anyone in Britain to fight me.

“The Moreno fight was a good chance for me to prove myself.

“He was a world class opponent but his government were funding the fight and they pulled out at the last minute.

“I won my British eliminator but I didn’t get my shot – Martin Ward came straight up from bantamweight.

“He got a shot before me even though I’m the only person that won a British eliminator.

“I had a phone call asking if I’d fight Gamal Yafai and I said yes but then he came back saying he didn’t want to fight me either.

“He ended up fighting a final Commonwealth eliminator when I could have had a shot at that.

“They won’t fight me because my style is awkward,” he added.

“When I’m at the top of my game I’m an excellent fighter and I can make good fighters look quite poor.

“I’m a switch-hitter; I’m awkward with low hands coming from all angles.

“I wouldn’t like to fight me if I’m truthful – I’m an awkward b******.”

Turley says he’s struggling to make a living out of boxing.

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” he said.

“I’m trying to make money out of the game but I’m not making anything at the moment.

“I’ve been going for a long time and I want to see how far I can go but I’m not getting the shots.

“The next thing I’ll have to try is starting Twitter because that seems to work in setting up fights.

“I’ll be calling them all out and telling everybody that they won’t fight me.”
