LEE Churcher is brimming with confidence ahead of the biggest fight of his career, even if he has been left frustrated in the build up to it.

The 35-year-old Newport boxer faces Hungary-based Sandor Micsko for the vacant WBF Intercontinental middleweight title at Pill Millennium Centre on Saturday, April 2.

The nine-bout show had been scheduled to take place early next month but a couple of injuries to some of the fighters on the bill saw it put back.

Nevertheless, Churcher, a former Welsh and British Masters champion, cannot wait to get in the ring and show what he is made of in front of his fans.

“He is ranked higher than me but I’m ready for him, there are no ifs or buts about it,” he said.

“Even though he is miles above me in the rankings, I’ve just got much more ability.

“It’s my biggest fight to date and it’s at home in front of lots of local supporters.

“I just can’t wait to get it over and done with.”

Ukraine-born Micsko, 29, has won 27 of his 39 fights but lost four of his last seven, including a shot at the WBO European belt.

The Tony Borg-trained Churcher added: “I’ve won the Welsh title and the British Masters, and now I’m hoping to take it even higher with WBF.

“It’s definitely my biggest fight and if I can win this I will shoot right up the rankings.

“I feel I’m in awesome shape, probably the best shape I’ve ever been in.

“This has been a long time coming for me and hopefully I can go for a world title if I win.

“Everything has been going well in training, it has just been frustrating with the delay.

“But it’s all ready to rock and roll and everyone on the show has been matched.”

Churcher has fought at the Pill Millennium Centre before, although on that occasion, against Costas Osben back in July 2011, the Newport man was on the wrong end of a second-round stoppage.

April’s clash is Churcher’s first since last May and will again come under the jurisdiction of the Malta Boxing Commission.

The likes of fellow Newport fighter Martyn Silbor will also feature on a bill which includes three professional and six semi-professional contests.
