TALK of a possible showdown with Carl Frampton or Leo Santa Cruz later this year won’t take Lee Selby’s attention away from his world title defence against Eric Hunter.

WBA and IBF super-bantamweight king Frampton and WBA featherweight champion Santa Cruz have both called out the Welshman ahead of the Hunter bout.

Tony Borg-trained Selby says he would fight either of them but defeating American Hunter and defending his IBF featherweight crown for the second time is his primary focus.

The date and location of the fight has yet to be confirmed, although Borg expects the contest to take place at the O2 Arena in London on April 9.

If that does happen it would see Selby return to the venue where he captured the title against Evgeny Gradovich last May.

“My full concentration is on my next fight against Eric Hunter,” insisted Selby. “He’s a great fighter and I’ve got to be fully focused on him.

“Eric Hunter’s the number one challenger. He punches hard and two of his three defeats have been disqualifications.

“He is quite awkward and pretty negative at times. I see the first half of the fight as a feeling out process trying to outsmart each other.

“We’ll both look to find our range and then I’ll take over later on.”

In the grander scheme of things, a win for Selby could lead to a mouth-watering dust-up with either Frampton or Santa Cruz.

“I’m in a great position,” added the St Joseph’s fighter. “As long as I come through this mandatory challenger then there are some massive fights out there for me.

“Carl Frampton called me out on the weekend, Leo Santa Cruz called me out on the weekend, and they’re both huge stars in boxing.

“A fight against either of them at the Principality Stadium would be great in an ideal world.”

Selby is set to travel to Spain for a training camp after his younger brother Andrew’s fourth pro fight at the Newport Centre next Friday.

Meanwhile, as well as Robbie Turley’s British title eliminator in the north-east of England, two more St Joseph’s boxers are in action this Saturday.

Super-middleweight Morgan Jones and super-lightweight Kyle Jones face Charlie Brown and Fonz Alexander respectively at a show in Merthyr Tydfil.
