BRADLEY Pryce feels he has bigger fish to fry than Barrie Jones and won’t sit around waiting for the duo’s Welsh title fight to be rescheduled.

The two were supposed to meet at the Newport Centre last Friday but Jones cried off with a chest infection.

Instead, Pryce took on and beat Nottingham’s Simone Lucas with a six-round points victory on what was the 10th anniversary of him becoming Commonwealth champion at the same venue.

Pryce, who turns 35 on Tuesday, was satisfied with his performance after a somewhat slow start.

He also stated that there is “no light-middleweight in Britain who will beat me” when he is at the top of his game, and that includes Jones.

“My record is littered with losses so obviously anyone who fights me thinks they’ve got a chance of beating me,” said the boxer nicknamed ‘Sugar Sweet’.

“These types of guys don’t beat me and the same would apply to Barrie Jones.

“I know they want me and Barrie Jones on the next Sanigar bill but unless there’s a better offer financially the fight won’t happen.

“I’m not going to sit around waiting for Barrie Jones, he’s not in my league, so we’ll see what comes up next.

“I’ll see what options are about and what’s best for me. I’m ideally looking for 12-round fights now.

“I believe that when I train as I can there is no light-middleweight in Britain who will beat me.”

Pryce’s defeat of Lucas featured a knockdown in the penultimate round before the Newport fighter received a 60-55 verdict from referee Reece Carter.

And claiming a victory exactly a decade after that Commonwealth triumph over Ossie Duran was just what Pryce wanted.

“I was in that ring 10 years ago and I pulled off the performance of my life,” he added.

“No-one expected me to beat Ossie Duran but I did that day and 10 years later I put on another good performance.

“It was a great moment going to the Newport Centre and thinking about 10 years ago when I won the fight of my life.

“Going in there on Friday I wanted to produce something special.

“It was Sugar Sweet of old. Over 12 rounds you’d see a lot more of that, on Friday I showed little glimpses of the old me.”

Meanwhile, Newport amateur Sean McGoldrick won a silver medal at the Gee Bee tournament in Helsinki, Finland, losing out on gold in the 56kg class to Russia’s Bakhtovar Nazirov.
