ST. JOSEPH’S middleweight Frankie Borg is targeting success on home turf next month when he fights for the first time in nearly 12 months.

Borg, 35, wants to take his tally of wins as a pro into double figures at the expense of Northern Ireland’s unbeaten hope Conrad Cummings.

The contest, which features on the same bill as Andrew Selby’s British flyweight title clash with Louis Norman, takes place just a mile or so from Borg’s Cardiff home.

Barry McGuigan’s Cyclone Promotions delivers the show at the new Ice Arena Wales on May 14 alongside Sanigar Events.

For Borg, a former Welsh champion who has lost his last three bouts, getting the chance to step into the ring again couldn’t come sooner.

“I last boxed when I fought Ben Davies up in Barnsley last June,” said Borg. “I was offered a 10-round fight and jumped at the chance.

“I had a point deducted for a low blow in the fifth and by the seventh my legs were really heavy.

“The referee stopped me on my feet but I was schooling him.

“I was supposed to fight on the Newport show last October but nothing happened.

“Christmas and new year came and went and I was offered a fight but I was on holiday at the time.

“I’ve been training since and I can’t wait for this fight in Cardiff.

“It’s not an easy one to get back into it but I’m fighting on home turf and the pressure is on him because he’s unbeaten.”

He continued: “I’ve got a chance to take that unbeaten record away from him and I’m looking to get back to winning ways myself.

“I’ve lost my last three fights so I want to get my 10th victory in my hometown.

“If I can get a good win then I’ll push up the rankings as well.

“It’s going to be a big show with a world title fight and Andrew Selby going for the British title.

“It’s on my doorstep, I only live a mile away from the ice rink.”

Cummings, 11 years Borg’s junior, boasts eight wins and a draw from his nine fights in the paid ranks.

And Borg has a lot of respect for his opponent, adding: “He is a very strong boy who fought in the World Series of Boxing as well.

“He is a great talent and is a hard fighter, but I’m in good shape at the moment.”
