THE only person that can beat Andrew Selby is himself, according to trainer Tony Borg ahead of his charge’s first tilt at a major title tonight.

Louis Norman, who needed two attempts to make the eight stone limit at yesterday’s weigh-in, stands in the way of Selby becoming British flyweight champion in only his fifth professional bout.

The record of Charlie Magri, who won the same strap after just three fights, remains intact, but the 27-year-old could be the fastest Welsh boxer to a Lonsdale Belt if he takes the vacant crown.

Borg is adamant Selby is ready to make the step up to elite level and feels his experience in the amateur game will allow him to cope with the demands of high-pressure occasions.

“Andrew had a great schooling in the amateurs and boxed all around the world,” said Borg, who trains Selby at St Joseph's.

“There are top pros boxing now who Andrew beat on his way up through the amateurs.

“Norman is a very good fighter at British level but Andrew is a level or two above, and if he is on form he can end it in seven rounds.

“I think he will have too much for his opponent if he brings his A-game to the fight – the only person who can beat Andrew is himself.”

He added: “This is a great opportunity for Andrew, boxing on television and in his hometown for the first time at this level.”

The Selby-Norman clash is part of an action-packed Cyclone Promotions show at the Ice Arena Wales in Cardiff.

Top of the bill is Lee Haskins’ first defence of his IBF world bantamweight crown against Ivan Morales, while Cardiff’s undefeated Craig Kennedy and Belgian Joel Djeko fight for the vacant IBF international cruiserweight title.

Unbeaten Valleys prospect Tony Dixon faces Northern Ireland’s Paddy Gallagher in a potentially explosive battle for the vacant Celtic welterweight strap.

Selby’s fellow St Joes fighters Mitch Buckland, Frankie Borg and Morgan Jones are also in action.

Undefeated Buckland and Jones tackle Mohamed Larabi and Richard Harrison at super-lightweight and light-heavyweight respectively, and middleweight Borg goes up against Conrad Cummings.

Cardiff light-heavyweight Nathan Thorley and Scottish super-lightweight Josh Taylor put their 100 per cent records on the line against Elvis Dube and Miguel Gonzalez.

The event is live on Channel 5 from 10pm.
