ANDREW Selby’s “immaculate” British flyweight title-winning performance has done nothing to change trainer Tony Borg’s opinion that the St Joseph’s fighter is destined for success at world level.

Borg was delighted with Selby’s display as he beat Louis Norman in Cardiff on Saturday night to become the fastest Welsh boxer to claim a Lonsdale belt.

Boxing legend Barry McGuigan also heaped praise on the 27-year-old for what he achieved after only five bouts as a professional, while Borg maintained his view that Selby can make it big in the sport.

“I was very pleased with his performance,” said Borg, who also trains Selby’s brother Lee, the current IBF world featherweight champion. “He entertained the crowd and did what he had to do in the ring.

“He is outstanding and has an amazing talent. We are just going to tap into it and bring out the best in him and take him to world honours.

“I really believe he’s going to go on and win a world title within the next year.

“I have no doubts whatsoever that Andrew can be world champion in the next 12 months.”

On the short-term plans, he added: “If we can get one or two defences in as quickly as possible then he can win the Lonsdale belt for keeps, which is something he wants to do.”

McGuigan, whose Cyclone Promotions staged the show at the Ice Arena Wales, was just as impressed with the way Selby fought to claim the vacant crown.

“Andrew was immaculate,” he said. “I can’t believe he can do that after just five fights and he set a great pace.

“Louis Norman was so courageous and put up a spirited performance, but Selby is a fantastic talent and one of the most talented kids I have ever seen.

“He needs a little bit of power but that will happen as time goes on.

“He will stop throwing so many punches but land shorts with more authority.”

Gary Buckland revealed last week that he is due to make his comeback at the Cardiff Bay venue in July, and McGuigan has vowed that Cyclone Promotions will return to the Ice Arena Wales.

He added: “We will be back here. It was a fantastic night which created so much atmosphere.

“It is a beautiful arena with a great crowd and it could not have been better.

“I was so thrilled with everyone because they did what they needed to do.

“They turned out and behaved themselves and it was brilliant.”
