ST JOSEPH’S ace Joe Cordina gave his hopes of Olympic success a further boost as he triumphed in his last event before heading to Rio.

Cordina beat Ukrainian Shestak Iurii and then South Korea’s Kuan Lee Myeong to claim 60kg gold at the Golden Belt tournament in Romania.

His victories in the both the semi-final and final came via unanimous decisions on the three judges’ scorecards.

Cordina is now preparing to fly out to Team GB’s pre-Olympic training camp ahead of the Rio Games, which start on August 5.

For the Cardiff-born lightweight, a European champion and Commonwealth Games bronze medallist, the Olympics in Brazil will be his first.

He is following in the footsteps of fellow St Joseph’s fighters Andrew Selby and Fred Evans, who both represented Team GB at London 2012.

Meanwhile, another boxer from the renowned Newport gym, Mitch Buckland, has revealed he is not going to be fighting in Cardiff this Saturday.

The unbeaten super-lightweight, 23, was scheduled to appear at the Ice Arena Wales on the same bill that features his older brother Gary.

This latest disappointment for Mitch comes on the back of his Celtic title showdown with Chris Jenkins, which had been set for July 2 in Swansea, also being shelved.
