NEWPORT’S Lee Churcher has revealed that he will fight for a world title in his home city later this year.

Churcher, 35, is set to challenge an as yet unnamed opponent for the vacant WBU middleweight crown in October.

The Newport Centre, where Churcher became Welsh champion in 2012, is expected to host the contest.

Ex-soldier Churcher put himself in contention to challenge for the World Boxing Union belt after knocking out Hungary’s Balazs Horvath inside two rounds in April.

That win at Pill Millennium Centre gave the Welshman the WBF Intercontinental middleweight strap – and he’s hoping to land an even bigger prize on home soil this autumn.

“It’s going to be the biggest belt I have ever fought for,” he said. “It’s down to three guys as to who I’m going to be fighting and I should find out soon.

“I had been promised a fight with WBU light-middleweight champion Craig Docherty but he is trying to avoid me.

“There are two other guys, one is from Nigeria, so it’s looking like it will be between those two.

“I’m looking forward to it whoever I fight. It’s going to be a huge show and I haven’t fought at the Newport Centre for a while.”

Before his outing in October, Churcher is busy getting ready for next Saturday’s ‘Back to the Future’ show in Pill.

Injury has forced former European champion Jason Cook to pull out of the event but Churcher is set to take part in an exhibition bout.

And he isn’t the only Gwent boxer on the now wholly semi-pro bill at the Millennium Centre.

Blackwood bare knuckle champion Christian Evans faces Maesteg’s Chadd George for the Welsh semi-pro cruiserweight title.

Newport’s David Taylor locks horns with Liam Preece for the Welsh semi-pro super-middleweight crown.

Two more Newport brawlers are also taking to the ring, with Martyn Silbor and Nicky Potts scheduled to meet former Blaina and Brynmawr rugby stalwart Darren Hayward and Trinant’s Leon Coker respectively.

Craig Morgan, who faces Toby Matthews, and Ryan Evans, who goes up against MMA star Danny Nash, are also appearing.

Churcher has revealed that both Morgan and Evans are set to turn professional after the show.

Meanwhile, a white collar charity bout between Chris Mahoney, from Newport, and Ian Rees has been included.

“The last show we did at the Millennium centre wasn’t as successful as it could have been,” added Churcher.

“I’m really looking forward to this one because there are some great match-ups which the public will enjoy.”
