JOE Cordina will follow fellow St Joseph’s fighter Sean McGoldrick into the professional ranks – but he hasn’t decided when the switch is going to happen.

The 24-year-old, who remains a member of the GB Boxing set-up for now, had been considering a move from the amateur game since a disappointing campaign at the Rio Olympics.

Cordina went to Brazil confident of bringing home a medal, but his quest was ended by Uzbekistan’s Hurshid Tojibaev in the last 16 of the lightweight division.

Prior to that, Cardiff-born Cordina had won bronze for Wales at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and claimed European gold a year later.

“As it stands I’m still a GB boxer, still in camp, but in the near future I will be turning professional,” he told BBC Radio Wales.

“I couldn't put a date on it. There’s a lot of things that can affect things when you turn pro.

“You don’t get the support from the lottery and UK Sport, you’re on your own and it’s a tough call.”

As well as his time in Sheffield with GB Boxing performance director Rob McCracken, Cordina has been around professional boxers for a while at St Joseph’s in Newport.

Training under Tony Borg, Cordina is a stablemate of, among others, Lee and Andrew Selby, Gary Buckland and Craig Evans.

Being in that sort of company will stand him in good stead for when he makes the transition.

“I spar with him (Lee Selby) quite a lot leading up to fights,” he added. “He’s someone you look to and if I want any advice I’m sure he’d give it.

“Same with Joe Calzaghe, if I look for any advice off him I’m sure he would pass it on.

“There’s some big fighters in Wales that are coming through. You’ve got Liam Williams, Andrew Selby, Craig Evans and Nathan Cleverly’s won a world title.

“Eventually when I do turn over I can follow in their footsteps.”
