MASON Jones pulled no punches when assessing his performance against journeyman Kevin McCauley – the Welshman even insisted he was treating the points victory as a defeat.

The Blaenavon super-welterweight won all four rounds against McCauley at Mayfair’s Sheraton Grand Park Lane Hotel to make it three wins from as many outings in the paid ranks.

However, the 23-year-old wasn’t best pleased with the way he went about things on the night, admitting his was a display that gave him and coach Lyndon James plenty to work on.

“I dominated every round but I wasn’t happy with my performance,” he said. “I probably fought at 20% of what I’m capable of.

“If I had performed to the extent I know I can then I would have stopped him in two or three rounds.

“I did what I had to do and got the win but it was a big learning curve for me – I’m treating it as a loss.

“I was really annoyed after the fight and my coach knew there was something wrong, not with my attitude, just with the way I performed.

“A lot of people whose opinions I really respect said I did well, but I know I didn’t perform.”

He added: “I watched the fight back four times and there were lots of little things I could pick holes in.

“But if I’m going to get better I’ve got to look at it as negatively as I can and see what I can improve on, rather than what I did well.”

Jones, who trains at Pontypool ABC and St Joseph’s Boxing Club in Newport, could be fighting next on a show in March.

Meanwhile, Jones was “devastated” for Lee Selby after the IBF world featherweight champion’s title defence in Las Vegas last weekend was called off.

Jones sparred with Selby, whose opponent Jonathan Victor Barros failed a medical, in the build-up to his fight against McCauley.

“It must be heartbreaking for Lee,” said Jones.
