BEING involved in a title fight tonight is just what the doctor ordered for Tony Borg, eight days after his Las Vegas dream was shattered.

The St Joseph’s trainer should have been fulfilling a lifetime’s ambition at the MGM Grand a week ago.

But the opportunity to do that was cruelly taken away from him when Lee Selby’s third defence of his IBF world featherweight crown was called off on the eve of the contest.

The bout fell through when challenger Jonathan Victor Barros failed to meet the medical requirements of the Nevada State Athletic Commission.

Prior to the bout, Borg had stated that he would never attend a Vegas fight night until was part of one.

He did go to watch the Carl Frampton-Leo Santa Cruz rematch which topped the bill Selby should have fought on.

“I still feel a bit flat,” he said. “It will take time to get over something like that.

“It would have been the biggest night of my coaching career.

“It doesn’t get much bigger than taking a boxer from South Wales to the MGM Grand in Las Vegas to defend his world title – it’s something dreams are made of.

“So to get that far and have that happen was a real kick in the teeth.

“I wouldn’t want to go back out there for the next couple of months.

“If Lee is going to fight someone straight away then I would want it to be over here.”

Luckily for Borg, he hasn’t had to wait long to be in the corner for another of his Newport-trained charges.

Andrew Selby, the younger brother of Lee, takes on WBC international flyweight champion Ardin Diale at London’s Olympia tonight.

“Having this fight helps a lot after what happened last weekend,” added Borg.

“I’d just wallow in self-pity if I didn’t have it.

“This is a good test for Andrew, and it’s a step up to the next level, but he’s ready to go.

“His opponent knows what it’s all about and he looks very sharp, but Andrew knows what he has to do.”

Borg also found out earlier this week that Joe Cordina, who he helped school as an amateur, was switching trainers after turning professional.

Rio Olympian Cordina signed a deal with Matchroom Boxing and will now be trained by Tony Sims in Essex.
