TOP CLASS amateur boxing makes its way to Newport tonight with the British Lionhearts seeking revenge against the France Fighting Roosters in the World Series of Boxing (WSB).

The clash at the Newport Centre will decide who wins the WSB’s European group and gives the Lionhearts an opportunity to avenge a 3-2 defeat to the French earlier in the campaign.

Brits Will Cawley (flyweight), Carl Fail (welterweight) and Solomon Dacres (super-heavyweight), and overseas picks Dzmitry Asanau (lightweight) and Joe Ward (light-heavyweight) form the home team.

Meanwhile, a group of up-and-coming Welsh boxers will have the chance to experience a big show atmosphere too.

As part of the event, the Lionhearts have agreed to stage an undercard of amateur bouts featuring Wales versus England match-ups.

Light-flyweight Billy Unsworth (Shotton ABC), lightweight Rhys Edwards (Rhondda ABC), welterweight Connor Burns (Llandudno ABC) and middleweight Jordan Withers (Gelligaer ABC) represent the host nation.

“It’ll be a tough match between the two top-placed teams to see who wins the European group and qualifies for the next stage of the tournament,” said Lionhearts head coach and GB Boxing performance director Rob McCracken.

“The British Lionhearts are fielding a strong team, despite the Commonwealth Games currently being under way in Australia.

“With the boxers who would normally compete in the World Series of Boxing unable to feature in the team, it’s an opportunity for the other boxers to step up and show what they can do.

“The team will be in good spirits following their victory in Croatia.

“We are up against a good team. It will be a great night of boxing for the fans.”

The action starts at 6.30pm.
