CALZAGHE Promotions is back in business with new and high-profile financial partners, the Argus can reveal.

The fledgling promotion company, set up by undefeated world champion Joe and his father and trainer Enzo, seemed to be in trouble after their second show, at the Merthyr Leisure Centre, was cancelled due to lack of ticket sales.

However, Argus columnist Joe wrote in these pages recently that he was hoping to take the company to the next level and that now seems to be a reality, with a show pencilled in for the Newport Centre on Friday, August 21.

The show is being called ‘The Boys are Back in Town’ as it will feature the return to the ring of Bradley Pryce, Tony Doherty and former world champion Gavin Rees.

However, it is news of Calzaghe’s new business partners that will really get the boxing world buzzing.

Calzaghe is joining forces with a new management agency named the Triple S Sports and Entertainment Group set up by football agent Paul Stretford and former Newcastle United chairman Freddy Shepherd.

No official announcement has yet been made, but the Argus understands a press conference in set to rubber-stump the new partnership later this month.

Team Calzaghe gym owner Enzo explained: “We want to be the future of boxing promoting, us, Hayemaker Promotions, Hatton Promotions, we are the future. We want to take things onto the next level and it’s great to be back in Newport.

“More fighters will be joining the ranks, but the immediate priority is to get fighters like Bradley Pryce, Gavin Rees and Tony Doherty to where they belong, being talked about as some of the finest talent in Britain.”

The trio will be joined on the bill by Hari Miles, the Calzaghe-trained light heavyweight, as well as Cardiff’s Wayne Brooks.

Renowned trainer Brian Coleman is helping with the match-making duties and some rising stars from retired Cwmbran fighter Gary Lockett’s growing stable may also feature.

Tickets for the show are available, priced at £30, £40 and £60 for ringside, from the box office on 01633 656757, Sergio Calzaghe on 07972050238 or from the fighters.

* Local fighters Paul Samuels, Lee Churcher and Justyn Hugh have all been added to the Hatton Promotions bill at the Newport Centre on Friday, July 24.

Headlined by Gary Buckland’s bid to take the British title, a host of other Newport names will have a chance to impress Hatton, who will be ringside. Tickets are available from the box office.
