ST JOSEPH’S fighters Robbie Turley and Gary Buckland are both aiming to bounce back from defeat as they target British titles, writes Andrew Penman.

Welsh and Celtic super-bantamweight champion Turley, who lost out to Dai Davies in his challenge for the Welsh featherweight title in July, returns to super-bantam in November.

The 27-year-old Cefn Fforest fighter takes on Devon’s Jamie Speight in a British title eliminator in Bristol on Saturday, November 8.

Fellow St Joes man Gary Buckland is also planning a return to his former weight division after successive defeats at lightweight.

The 28-year-old lost via a split decision in his rematch with Newbridge’s Gavin Rees in Cardiff in May.

And he was beaten by a unanimous decision as he took on Richard Commey for the vacant Commonwealth lightweight title in London in July.

Now Buckland is determined to reclaim the British super-featherweight title he lost when he was knocked out by Stephen Smith in August last year.

The Commey defeat made it three defeats in his last four bouts and Buckland wants to get back to winning ways on the Nathan Cleverly v Tony Bellew bill in November before challenging British title holder Gary Sykes.

“Commey was a good fight but I boxed the wrong fight,” he said. “I should have fought on the front foot more but he’s a big lump.

“I’ve always said I’ll fight anyone but he was heavy-handed and he was just a bigger lump.

“The plan is now to come back down to super-featherweight and hopefully get that British title back.

“I want to get on the Cleverly bill in November and then take on Gary Sykes, who holds it, or Liam Walsh.

“I’ll box any of them; I don’t care who it is as long as I get the belt back. Sykes has got the title and I want it.”
