BLACKWOOD boxer Craig Evans puts his unbeaten record on the line in London on Monday night as he gears up to fight for a first title, writes Andrew Penman.

The 25-year-old, who competes at lightweight or super-featherweight, has a perfect record of 12 wins from 12 bouts as a professional but his progress has slowed this year with only one other fight in 2014.

Evans, who trains with Tony Borg at St Joseph’s gym in Newport, beat Dame Seck in Liverpool in May but has been inactive since then.

He can’t wait to take out his frustrations on Ronnie Clark at the Hilton Hotel in Mayfair on Monday and set himself up for a much busier 2015 and a possible tilt at a title.

“It’s my first ten-rounder and I’m looking forward to it,” said Evans.

“I’ve been waiting a long time for this and I’ve had a few fights lined up that never came off.

“It’s been a frustrating year,” he added. “It’s been very stop-start. I’ve had one fight this year and seven months in between.

“That’s no good for me – I want to fight every three months ideally – and I hope to be much busier next year.

“If I get the chance to fight for a title and win it then that will keep me busy so that’s the aim.

“If I win this one I’ll be in the mix so it’s a big fight for me.”

Not that Evans is taking anything for granted against 29-year-old Scottish fighter Clark.

“I’m fighting a tough boy in Ronnie Clark who has had 15 fights and only lost one so it will be a good test,” he said.

“He had a British super-featherweight title eliminator in September and that is the only one he’s lost.

“I’ve not seen much of him but I know he’s a southpaw and he’s fought some decent opponents but I know if I bring my A game I’ll win.

“I’m feeling in the best shape I’ve ever been in so I’m confident of winning and then I’ll fight whoever they put in front of me, wherever it is.

“I’ve fought all over the country so it’s no problem for me.”
