PONTLLANFRAITH puncher Kody Davies underlined his status as one of the top amateur prospects in the UK by winning the British Championships in Rotherham at the weekend, writes Michael Pearlman.
The heavyweight, who represented Wales at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, has been doing pad work in recent months with Newbridge boxing legend Joe Calzaghe, a long-time friend of Kody’s father Kevin Davies.
The Davies family were on hand to see Kody’s latest triumph in Yorkshire; Kody winning the heavyweight final is superb style against England’s number one ranked heavyweight, Michael McKay.
Kody earned a unanimous points’ triumph in a dominant display, landing some big hooks to the head and body as he was judged to have won all three sessions, with his footwork and combinations allowing attacks from all angles.
Kody is the first Welsh fighter to win the British heavyweight title since Joe Urskin did so in 1953.
