TORFAEN Warriors star Chloe Thomas is facing an anxious wait to find out if she will become the latest fighter with Gwent links to join the GB Boxing set-up.

The 25-year-old has not long returned from Sheffield after being assessed by those who oversee Britain’s top amateurs.

A place among the country’s elite would see Thomas follow in the footsteps of St Joseph’s aces Andrew Selby and Sean McGoldrick, Kody Davies, from Blackwood, Joe Cordina and Fred Evans.

Her trip to the English Institute of Sport in South Yorkshire also saw Thomas rub shoulders with one of the world’s top heavyweights.

Anthony Joshua came through GB Boxing’s World Class Performance Programme to win gold at the 2012 Olympics, before going on to shine in the pro ranks.

Still unbeaten after 18 bouts, Joshua, the IBF world champion, meets legendary Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko at Wembley Stadium in late April for a huge sell-out showdown.

Speaking about his protégé’s Sheffield experience, Warriors head coach Simon Weaver said: “Chloe went up there after we had a call from the GB team saying they wanted to assess her.

“There were 26 female boxers from all around the country who were being assessed.

“They want to put together a team of girls who they can spend time with and then progress into the GB set-up.

“While she was there Chloe did a lot of sparring with the other girls, as well as a lot of fitness work.”

He added: “She has got a lot of potential and I have high hopes for her.

“She won the Golden Girl Championship in Sweden, the HSK Box Cup in Denmark, and the Haringey Box Cup in London last year.

“She was the only Welsh fighter at the Haringey Box Cup and was named the best female boxer at the tournament.”

While she waits for news of the outcome of her trial, Thomas also has the small matter of a 57kg Welsh Championships semi-final to look forward to.

Thomas, who travels to the Warriors’ gym in Cwmbran from her Port Talbot home twice a week, faces Jade Gitsham.

The clash between the two in Tylorstown this weekend will be something of a local derby as Gitsham boxes out of Afan Spartans ABC, which is also in Port Talbot.

Thomas has won the Welsh title for the last two years.
