BOXING legend Joe Calzaghe and dad Enzo are once again set to throw open the doors of their world-famous gym.

Newbridge Boxing Club was turned into an iconic venue during Joe’s 46-fight unbeaten career, as the southpaw defeated all before him to become a two-weight world champion.

Enzo trained his son, and guided Gavin Rees and Enzo Maccarinelli to world titles, until Joe’s retirement in 2008, but kept the gym open for another two years.

Now 68, Enzo decided to take a break from the sport in March 2010, however, that autumn he revealed that £30,000 of his own money had gone into transforming the gym.

That was followed by an attempt to find a future Welsh Olympic gold medallist and then, in 2015, gruelling boot camps for members of the public keen to get into shape.

Of late, the gym, located in Abercarn, has only been opened for one-off events and to give people the chance to look around the boxing museum installed there seven years ago.

But Enzo, Joe and the latter’s youngest of two sons, Connor, are now ready to get things moving again on the boxing front, with the gym expected to be open for various fitness classes by the end of May.

“The gym is an amazing place and we want to make sure people use it,” said Joe, 44, who owns the building with his dad.

“I’m back home full-time now and it would be nice to get the gym up and running again. We’re looking to get the local community involved with different classes on different days, as well as training fighters.

“You never know, we might discover the next Joe Calzaghe who could go on to become a world champion.”

He continued: “That gym has seen a lot of blood, sweat and tears – it has been part of our family for such a long time.”

Connor, 19, added: “Not everyone has ambitions of being a professional boxer. They may want to use the gym for fitness or self-defence, and you can learn a lot about discipline from boxing.”

The family are also hoping the gym will complement the Joe Calzaghe Boxing Academy, which is based at the Vale Sports Arena in Penarth.

“Our gym was the most successful in the world,” said Enzo.

“We went through it all and sometimes you need to take a break, but I’m happy to start up again.

“We don’t want people to come in and think they have to get into boxing, the fitness side of it is more important.”

The Calzaghes say they have had a number of enquiries about the gym over recent years, with people travelling from London and Scotland to savour a piece of boxing history.
