ST JOSEPH’S Boxing Club has produced its fair share of champions in recent years – and they have another one thanks to the exploits of teenager Ben Wetter.

The 14-year-old is the latest prodigy to receive the adulation of club members following his success at the GB School Championships.

The youngster has impressed his St Joes stablemates, including the likes of Lee and Andrew Selby, with an eagerness to improve and the determination required to be a champion.

Wetter initially won the Welsh 40kg title in early May before travelling to Ravenscraig in Scotland to battle it out with Britain’s finest.

The standard of all the home nations was expected to be extremely high, and that proved the case.

Wetter opened his campaign with a victory over reigning Scottish champion Mark Murdoch.

The Scotsman used his height and reach advantage from the outset but the St Joes ace’s work rate earned a unanimous decision.

Wetter then faced England’s Reece Taylor from the famed Pinewood Star Boxing Club.

Taylor was well-schooled in counter-punching but the tactic proved fruitless as the bout went on, particularly in the face of Wetter's frenetic and accurate combinations.

The Welshman was declared the winner and British champion on a majority decision, much to the delight of him, his Welsh teammates and the coaching staff.

Club coach Bill Reynolds said: “Ben is a dream to coach. He's probably one of the most committed and determined members we have had in many years.

“This is a thoroughly deserved result for Ben, particularly as he has trained and prepared as diligently as any of the more famous boxers he trains alongside.”

As current British champion Wetter will have no time to rest as he gets ready to compete in the Hull Box Cup this weekend.

The tournament has more than 400 entrants with some from as far afield as Australia and the USA.
