NEWPORT’S Lee Churcher is set to challenge for the vacant Celtic super-welterweight title in Swansea next month, in his first fight with the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBoC) in more than five years.

The 36-year-old faces an as yet unnamed opponent on the Welsh Fight Academy show at the Brangwyn Hall on July 22, which also features Pontypool’s Kieran Gething.

Churcher was scheduled to appear on the fledgling promotion company’s first bill at the same Swansea venue in May but pulled out to box in Cardiff a fortnight later.

However, his BBBoC comeback had to be put on hold after an issue with a brain scan, that has since resolved, arose.

With that matter behind him the former Welsh and British Masters champion is free to try and add another belt to his collection.

While fighting under the jurisdiction of the Malta Boxing Commission, Churcher claimed the WBF intercontinental and WBU world middleweight straps.

That last Swansea show saw Gething record his first professional win with a fourth-round knockout of Rob Brown.

Gething, 23, who also has one loss and a draw on his record, is waiting to find out who his opponent will be this time around.

There will be a heavy home country presence at the Brangwyn Hall with unbeaten Alex Hughes, Jay Harris and Ricky Owen lining up on the undercard.

Added to those names are Zack Davies, Mano Lee, Geraint Goodridge and two-time British super-lightweight title challenger Chris Jenkins.

Swansea was selected as the location for Welsh Fight Academy's second show following a poll on social media.

Wales' second city received 60 per cent of a Twitter vote, Cardiff had 26 per cent, Bridgend nine per cent and Newport five per cent.

Welsh Fight Academy is the latest venture for experienced promoter Mo Prior.
