IT’S been two weeks since my last column as we played last Friday night and a lot has happened in that time.

We followed up our 6-2 win over Cambridge, probably our best performance of the season, with a poor defeat at Alfreton when we gave away silly goals.

The gaffer has also made three new signings and put three of the squad on the transfer list – so just another quiet couple of weeks down at Newport County!

That win over Cambridge was a brilliant night for me as I got my second goal of the season (I’m counting the one against Woking as well, even if Danny Crow is claiming it) and the boys were exceptional.

The match at Alfreton was a bit different and we were all disappointed with the way we played in front of the Premier Sport TV cameras.

But, as I’ve said before, we won’t get too carried away with our victories and we won’t be too despondent after defeats.

This league is difficult for everyone and on their day any team can beat any other.

We saw that last Saturday with other results going our way and that means we are still three points clear at the top of the table, even though it’s been a tough few weeks.

We’ve just got to make sure we have more good days than bad and we’ll keep working hard to stay where we are.

We know we are not good enough to just turn up and win – we’ve got to give it everything.

Me and a few of the boys have been using the facilities free of charge at Fitness 4 Less, just round the corner from Rodney Parade, to make sure we stay in shape on top of our club training.

It’s not until after Christmas that the promotion race really starts to take shape but we’re in a good position. We’re confident we can stay in the hunt but we’re not cocky.

The only disappointing thing about the win over Cambridge was the relatively low crowd.

We’ve lost a few games recently and I’ve heard a bit of negativity around the city but people have to remember we are still top of the league.

Hopefully a lot of fans will return for today’s match against Hyde to cheer us on to another three points.

I genuinely think the supporters don’t realise how important they are and how big a part they can play.

If we get an early goal and the crowd gets fired up then Rodney Parade can be a really intimidating place for teams like Hyde.

I know it’s expensive to watch football these days, Christmas is coming up and it’s right that people put families first but I can speak for all the players when I say we really appreciate your backing.

We took something like 12,000 people to Wembley last season so it shows that the support is there and with under-12s getting in free today hopefully that will boost the attendance.

It’s really important that we get the youngsters in Newport supporting their local club rather than Manchester United or Cardiff City.

I’m really pleased that my old mate Byron Anthony has officially signed for us.

It’s great that we have a few local lads in the side because we really know how important this club is to Newport.

Christian Jolley is a really good player as well. I played against him for Bradford last season when he was doing well for AFC Wimbledon and we both scored in that match.

He’s always impressed me whenever I’ve seen him and he knows what it takes to get promoted to the Football League so it’s great to have him on board for the next few months at least.

And Michael Smith is only here for one month at the moment but hopefully we can get him for longer because he’s made a great start for us.

On the other side of things it’s been difficult for Jefferson Louis, Ryan Charles and Jake Harris, who were all made available for transfer this week.

New signings keep us all on our toes and the gaffer felt he needed to freshen up the squad.

He knows what he’s doing and he just wants to make sure we stay where we are.

The boys may be on the transfer list but they know that is part and parcel of being a footballer and while they are still at the club I know they will all give 100 per cent for the cause like the rest of us.
