WAYNE Rooney will be sunning himself in Las Vegas as one of his newly-acquired racehorses has his second start in equally glorious conditions at Chepstow today.

Tomway, named after the footballer’s father Thomas Wayne, lines-up in the opener at 2.10, the 32RedPoker.com Maiden Stakes.

All eyes were on the Manchester United star when the two-year-old colt and Rooney’s other horse Pippy, made their debuts at Chester on May 9.

Unfortunately, both did not make a flying start to their careers, as they trailed in nearer last than first in their respective contests.

Their Cheshire-based trainer Tom Dascombe told the Argus he did not know if Wayne, currently on holiday with wife Coleen and their son Kai, two, in Las Vegas, before the start of Euro 2012, would be watching from afar.

But he said: “I expect we will speak before the race and afterwards.”

Tomway faces nine opponents in today’s race, on a course which Dascombe believes will suit Rooney’s horse compared to the twists and turns of Chester.

He said: “Hopefully he will run well. The idea is to win a few races and have a bit of fun with him.”

Rooney too is optimistic, if his tweet the day after watching his two horses make their first appearances is anything to go by.

Messaging his 4,160,016 Twitter followers on May 10, he wrote: “Pippy and Tomway got great experience at Chester. They will both be better for it. Interesting few weeks ahead for them.”

Rebecca Joy, general manager at Chepstow Racecourse, said there has been increased interest than the average week day ahead of the meeting, and she puts that down to the celebrity connection.

Racing takes place there for the first time since April 14, as rain has played havoc with the fixture list.

Ms Joy said: “There seems to be a bit of excitement and we have had a bit of an influx of ticket sales from people interested to see how Tomway gets on.” For those not able to make it to the track, the meeting will be broadcast live on At The Races.
