IT WAS another great week for Newport County, albeit a little less spectacular than the performances against Cambridge and Northampton.

To collect a point at Tranmere was a decent dividend, but the effort at Shrewsbury surely eclipses it and will stand out as one of Newport's best rearguard actions since their return to the Football League.

The Exiles are six unbeaten now and I'm pleased to see Justin Edinburgh looking revitalised along with a few of his players.

He's been exceptionally active so far this season and like he did with Karl Darlow, appears to have pulled off a masterstroke with another goalkeeping loan signing in Joe Day.

However, Edinburgh's faith in County's youth players - handing a start to 16-year old Regan Poole - is also exceptionally pleasing to see.

Edinburgh had a track record at County of blooding young players, but it hasn't been a trend that we've seen much in 2014.

County's long term future as a Football League club is dependent on them producing their own talent and part of that is having a manager brave enough to say "they are ready."

It's the kind of thing you can do with the confidence of a good unbeaten run and the Exiles will look for victory number three of the season at home to Wimbledon on Saturday.

Edinburgh will now turn his attention to getting his strikers firing and if he can't, in a month he'll have Joe Parker and Shaun Jeffers ready to return after plenty of game time. Shrewd management.

Having spent a week at the Celtic Manor it's impossible for me not to be excited and consumed with thoughts of the Ryder Cup, one of the true highlights of the sporting calendar.

I can't say much different to all the other tipsters - I think Europe will win and it'll be exceptionally close - but I am ready to make a couple of predictions about the sixth Welshman to play Ryder Cup golf, Jamie Donaldson.

I believe the Pontypridd-putter is in such fine form and is such an amiable guy - he'll be a sought-after partner - that he will defy all expectations of a rookie.

Unlike Phillip "tell them who I beat Lee," Price, I don't expect Donaldson to wait until the Sunday singles before he's called into action.
