WE’LL be digging out our flippers for today’s match against Alfreton as we aim to make a splash in our final league game at Rodney Parade before the play-offs.

The pitch looked more suited to water polo than football after Thursday’s win over Macclesfield after an incredible downpour but hopefully the rain holds off and we can get another three points in the bag this afternoon.

It’s been a great week with the win over Braintree on Tuesday securing our place in the play-offs and then the manager Justin Edinburgh and his assistant Jimmy Dack signing new two-year contracts before we hammered Macclesfield 4-1.

The new deal is well deserved as far as the players are concerned.

They’ve done an unbelievable job here, taking the club from relegation material to promotion candidates in a year.

The team spirit is fantastic and that’s down to the manager. He’s very selective in who he brings in and he and Jimmy deserve a pat on the back for all their hard work.

We’re in the play-offs now and we’ve got there on merit but we want to go into those games in good form.

We want the other teams to be worried about us rather than the other way round and we don’t want to be going in a little bit nervous after a few bad results.

That means today’s game and the trips to Luton and Grimsby are important.

I thought we were superb against Macclesfield.

We scored some good goals and the gaffer did brilliantly by mixing the squad up to give everyone a chance to shine.

I think a little bit of grease on the pitch helped us play a bit of football and it was good to see the lads who haven’t played much come in and do really well.

I came off the bench in both games this week and after my groin injury I’m obviously delighted to be back in time for what will be the most vital part of the whole season.

I was a little bit nervous when I came on Tuesday because you never know how your body will react.

It’s always the case, especially with a muscle tear, but I’ve come through two games and it was a good test on a heavy surface on Thursday, so I’m pleased.

I slipped over towards the end and the muscle was fine, so I’m fit now and ready to go for the play-offs.

Danny Crow and Ben Swallow are almost there as well so the only player we’ll be missing is Max Porter.

That is a real shame for Max because he’s been one of our most consistent players and we’ve missed him but Alex Gilbey has come in and looked like a real prospect and Lee Minshull has been superb over the last few months.

Robbie Willmott and Christian Jolley are finding form up front and Conor Washington got his first goal on Tuesday so there is great competition for places all over the pitch.

I was really pleased for Conor because he’s a great kid. He’s not the brightest – he’s the Trigger of the squad, which probably makes me the Del Boy – but I like seeing good kids do well and he can be a bit of a secret weapon for us over the next few weeks.

We are trying not to look too far beyond the next three games but as far as the play-offs are concerned I would prefer a home game second to get the fans behind us and create a really hostile atmosphere at Rodney Parade.

But if we do play at home first then we have to make sure we take a good advantage into the second leg.

Ideally, from a Welsh sports fan’s point of view, I’d want to play Wrexham in the final because at least then you’d have one club back in the Football League.

Hopefully that will be us but we just have to wait and see. What will be will be and we can’t worry about who we are facing or where we are playing when.

We just have to focus on the next three games and then we’ll know where we stand.
