WOW! What an unbelievable week this has been for me and for Newport County AFC.

This is my final Argus column of the season and it’s one I’m absolutely delighted to be writing.

Last Sunday’s victory at Wembley was, without a doubt, the best day of my football career.

I’ve played at a higher level but to me, as a Newport boy, helping my hometown club back into the Football League means more than anything else I’ve achieved.

It was definitely worth coming back home for. I talked to the Argus when I signed last summer and I said then that the aim was to go up.

We weren’t there to make up the numbers. We all believed in what the gaffer was building and all the hard work has paid off.

After 25 years Newport County are back in the Football League. Sounds good doesn’t it?

And what a way to do it! I’d rather win the league because I don’t enjoy the lottery of the play-offs but we had such a belief that we were the better side and I think we went out and showed it in the end.

I went off after 75 minutes so I was on the touchline watching when Christian Jolley scored and I was very emotional.

I’m not ashamed to say I was in tears at the side of the pitch in front of the County fans.

I’ve never had that sort of reaction before. I was very proud to be part of a promotion team with Wigan but this is on a whole other level.

I’ve got no hard feelings about being taken off. The gaffer felt he needed to freshen it up and it worked. Aaron O’Connor and Scott Donnelly came on and gave us some extra impetus and you saw what happened at the end.

It’s another decision that the gaffer got right, as he has all season.

Even when I wasn’t in the team at the start of the campaign I wanted us to do well and that’s how it should be – about the team and not the individual.

I’ve said all season that the team spirit here is the best I’ve experienced and that is probably what got us where we are more than anything.

As for the rest of the match you have to say that Wrexham had their chances and Lenny Pidgeley made some great saves for us.

But I don’t agree with some people who said that Wrexham dominated. They should have scored at least one though and the big moment for me was Lenny’s save from Andy Morrell when Brett Ormerod put the rebound over the bar.

I already had belief that we were going to win and then I knew we were going to win.

The celebrations on the pitch afterwards were incredible and I’ll never forget how good that felt.

And Wednesday’s open top bus parade was almost as good. They’ve shown it all season but it just tells you how much passion and commitment the fans have once again.

It’s great that we had a celebration in Newport because we know not all of the fans could get to Wembley and it’s nice that we can show them our appreciation and they had the chance to show how much it means to them.

There were a lot more people on the streets than I thought there would be with the weather turning a little bit dodgy so I take my hat off to all the fans.

I’d like to say a big thank you from all the players for your support this season and we’re all delighted that we could reward you with what was a special day at Wembley and a special week.

I’d also like to thank Mark Crook and Henry Howard Finance for their help throughout the year and my kit sponsors as well.

The players are all planning a holiday together now before we go away with our families and then it’ll be time to look forward to next season and playing in League Two.

I’ve had negotiations with the club and they’ve gone well so I’m staying put.

The bottom line is I don’t want to go anywhere else.

I’m happy, I’m home and this is where I want to stay.

Finally I have to wish my old clubs good luck in hopefully securing a Wembley treble for me.

If Wigan can win the FA Cup today and Bradford win their play-off final it will be the perfect year with my old clubs matching the County!

Thanks for everything this season. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading this column throughout the past months and hopefully I’ll be writing about more success next year. Have a great summer!
