WE MIGHT be looking for our first win of the season when we start our County Championship game against Gloucestershire this morning but there is no shortage of confidence in the camp.

There is no hiding from the fact that it has been a massively disappointing start to the campaign.

After a good pre-season we were confident of getting off to a flier but instead we have lost our three Division Two games.

I don’t think that we played well enough in the defeats to Leicestershire and Derbyshire but Hampshire was a different story last week.

We lost by two wickets when they hit the winning runs on the penultimate ball and it was a bitter pill to swallow because I thought that we produced the outstanding individual performances of the game.

Ben Wright’s second innings 104 was superb while Huw Waters bowled brilliantly to take seven wickets in the first innings.

But cricket is a tough game at the best of times and I don’t think that we got what we deserved.

To go so close to victory was hard to take but we cannot afford to dwell on things and we just have to keep plugging away.

I think it’s up to us batsmen to build some big partnerships, even though everyone throughout the country is finding it tough on these early season wickets.

The bowlers have done well and we need to put some big runs on the board.

On that front it was frustrating for me last week because I felt good in the first innings but rain interruptions kept disrupting me.

I fell to a smart catch for 45 and it was massively disappointing to fail to post a big total.

Hopefully I can put that right over the next few days and I can finally taste victory after what was a double defeat at the Swalec Stadium.

While we were off for rain on day four I took on Graham Wagg on the pool table and quietly fancied my chances.

Unfortunately he’s quite the hustler.

I was whitewashed 3-0 and have suffered the consequences.

I can cope with my beard being shaved off but the one-eyebrow look is harder to carry off.

According to Google it could take a month or two to grow back.

Hopefully I can hide from the embarrassment under my helmet during some lengthy knocks in the middle.
