SOUTH WALES PREMIER LEAGUE PREVIEW

NEWPORT will aim to show the same fighting spirit that saw them avoid defeat on the opening day of the Premier League season when they head to Cardiff tomorrow.

It was a tough start for Gary Wood and his side but they managed to salvage eight points from a clash with much-fancied Mumbles.

The visitors piled on 268-8 at Spytty Park with their captain Darren Thomas, the former Glamorgan all-rounder, smashing 115 off 104 balls.

A loss looked on the cards when Newport slumped to 127-8 but skipper Wood led from the front.

He formed partnerships with Gareth Thomas and young seamer Harry Powell as the hosts hung on.

It doesn’t get any easier for Newport’s inexperienced side as tomorrow they take on Cardiff at the Diamond Ground.

The 2011 champions got off to a fantastic start last weekend when crushing Port Talbot by 148 runs at the New Mansel.

Newport’s batsmen had better beware Ruaidhri Smith and Stefan Kelly who were inspired with the new ball last weekend when taking combined figures of 8 for 52.
