IT'S been a good week for impressive bowling figures – and a bright prospect from Newport has joined the party.

First Graham Wagg took five for 14 in helping Glamorgan start their Friends Life t20 campaign with a bang at Worcestershire.

Then on Saturday Jon Denning, the 22-year-old left-arm seamer from Abergavenny, claimed a remarkable 9-19 for Pontarddulais against Port Talbot in the Premier League.

And Rogerstone teenager Harry Powell, who has come through the ranks at Newport CC, has joined in with a magnificent display for Glamorgan Seconds against MCC Young Cricketers.

The 18-year-old pace bowler was clearly at home in the other Newport as he claimed six victims for the loss of eight runs off 6.4 overs on the Isle of Wight.

Predictably, it was a record for Glamorgan in the Second Eleven Trophy and set up a four-wicket win.

“Harry is a really talented player with good pace but his main asset is his ability to swing the ball,” said Newport coach Mike Knight.

“He gets top-order batters out but hasn't actually had an awful lot of luck in the Premier League so far this season.

“He has been doing his A-Levels so perhaps the weight is now off his shoulders. Harry is a smashing kid and deserves success because he works and practices so hard.”

The MCC batsmen were making reasonable progress on 124-3 before Powell, who goes to St Joseph’s High School, claimed his first scalp in the 23rd over.

Then, from the moment he trapped Naresh Budhayer leg before, it was mayhem.

Andrew Salter claimed one wicket but the rest went to Powell and the innings was ended less than 13 overs after he was first thrown the ball by captain Gareth Rees.

Powell was up against the same opponents at the same ground yesterday but did not get the chance to repeat the trick.

The Seconds won the toss and decided to bat in Newport, finishing the rain-affected day on 249-7 with Powell yet to head to the middle.

Powell’s six victims: NB Budhayer lbw 31, AJ Hose bowled 6, SS McKechnie bowled 0, SC Getkate bowled 1, JG Hoddle caught TJ Lancefield 4, J Price bowled 1.
