VETERAN spinner Dean Cosker has been allocated to Newport for the forthcoming South Wales Premier League season, writes Chris Kirwan.

When the left-arm spinner is released by Glamorgan he will play for the Spytty Park club, who were third in Division One last year, while batsman Will Bragg will play for Panteg in Division Two.

Andrew Salter had been allocated to Newport in recent years but he will play for Swansea in the coming campaign while 38-year-old Cosker, who is still a potent force in one-day cricket, will play close to his Marshfield home after being with Carmarthen Wanderers in 2015.

Cwmbran’s Bragg returns to Panteg, who were pipped to promotion by Swansea last year, after the left-handed top-order batsman was previously allocated to Aberdare.

Players are unlikely to be released too frequently given the hectic nature of the fixture schedule.

Meanwhile, Glamorgan have joined forces with Fitzalan High School in Cardiff to offer a sports studies qualification with cricket coach.

From September, students aged between 16 and 18 will be able to study for a BTEC Level 3 in sport alongside professional cricket coaching.

The education will be delivered at The SSE SWALEC by TVS Education on behalf of Fitzalan High School, both of whom have extensive experience in delivering combined academic and sport qualifications that lead to university or sport related employment.

As well as cricket training and coaching tuition from Glamorgan's staff, students will receive advice on conditioning, physiotherapy and mental training, experience first-hand of how an international sports stadium operates and benefit from classroom teaching from one of Glamorgan's former professionals.
