GWENT batsman Will Bragg believes the return of county cricket to Newport presents a golden opportunity for young talent as he prepares to captain Glamorgan against Pakistan A.

Robert Croft's side will welcome the tourists to Spytty Park on Friday (10.30am start) for a 50-over encounter to help them prepare for a triangular tournament with their Sri Lankan counterparts and England Lions.

Glamorgan haven't headed to the city since the 1990 One-Day League match against Yorkshire at Rodney Parade, which was washed out without a ball being bowled.

This time they are at a Spytty Park ground that is familiar to Bragg, who played at the venue when coming through the ranks at Malpas and then featuring for Panteg. He was also allocated to Newport for the 2013 Premier League season.

"Newport is a well-run club and it's a good ground to stage first-class cricket at," said Bragg. "There's always a nice, consistent wicket and it also spins, so it should be a good test against Pakistan A.

"It's a nice change to play at an out ground and it should be a good atmosphere rather than playing in front of empty stands."

Because Glamorgan are taking on Hampshire in the NatWest T20 Blast on Thursday evening it is set to be a youthful side that takes to Spytty Park.

Wicket-keeper Cameron Herring, from Tredegar and formerly of Gloucestershire, is set to feature and Bragg has urged the promising talent to make an impression.

"The T20 schedule takes the team here, there and everywhere so this is an ideal game for the youngsters to get a chance against what should be a quality side full of aspiring international cricketers," he said.

"Pakistan will no doubt have some quality quick and spin bowlers and will come with an attacking attitude so our players have a great opportunity to show that they can make the step up."

While others are trying to show they can cut it at the top, Bragg will be looking to keep ticking along after enjoying a fine first half of 2016.

The 29-year-old is averaging 43.13 in first-class cricket with two centuries, including a career best unbeaten 161, and three half-centuries to his name.

"I've often started off the season well and not seen it through so the challenge for me is to continue my form," said the left-hander.

"I need to be consistent throughout the year and maintain my form because I've done pretty well with 600 runs in red-ball cricket while I'm averaging 49 in the One-Day Cup."

Entrance to Friday's fixture is free but spectators will be asked to purchase a special souvenir programme to raise funds for the club.
