THE equation for Newport tomorrow couldn’t be simpler – beat Port Talbot in their last match of the season and they will guarantee themselves the South Wales Premier League title.

Michael Clayden’s men travel west in search of the Division One championship knowing that they could still take the league crown even if they were to lose.

But they obviously don't want to leave anything to chance on what may well be a very special weekend for the Spytty Park club.

Table-toppers Newport are 11 points clear at the summit ahead of their trip to Port Talbot, with the only other side that can pip them to the trophy, Cardiff, visiting Neath.

“I imagine there will be a few nerves when the game starts, but that’s cricket,” said captain Clayden.

“As soon as you get a bit of momentum you have to keep hold of it, and that’s what we will look to do.

“Big games need big performances and all I will say to the players is to be confident and do their best.”

He added: “It could be a really good weekend for the club with the seconds also trying to win their league and the thirds going for promotion.

“If we could get the job done it would be the pinnacle for us in club cricket.

“Newport’s success this season shows the talent we have at this club and all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes.”

Meanwhile, bottom side Swansea will be desperate for points to avoid relegation when they host Pontarddulais, Ammanford entertain Mumbles and Ynysygerwn face Bridgend.

To say the destiny of the Division Two title going into the final round of fixtures is on a knife-edge would be a massive understatement.

Leaders Panteg are three points ahead of Penarth – and the two meet in Penarth tomorrow in a winner-takes-all showdown.

“We are confident,” said Panteg captain Ian Bird. “We are top of the league and going into the game in a good place.

“We are three points ahead of Penarth and have got a pretty decent record at their place over recent years.

“We are going there feeling confident but safe in the knowledge that we are going to be in for a tough test.

“One thing we can’t control is the weather and if it does come into it then it comes into it – it’s just a case of controlling what we can control.”

He added: “Other than when we lost to Penarth at the halfway stage we haven’t lost a game this season.

“We’ve been in this position before where we have gone up and hopefully our experience will stand us in good stead for the weekend.

“It’s bound to be a tight game but hopefully our lads will stand up and be counted.”

In South East Wales League Division One, Newport Fugitives still hold all the aces as they move closer to the championship.

The Fugies, who head the standings by 13 points, host reigning champions Chepstow tomorrow, with second-placed Newbridge looking to gain ground with a home win over struggling Radyr.

Elsewhere, Blackwood go to Abergavenny, Croesyceiliog entertain Usk and Sudbrook visit Pontypridd.

In Division Two, a win for Malpas against Cardiff Gymkhana would further strengthen their grip on first place with two games left, while Monmouth will be hoping to preserve top spot in Division Three when they host Vale.
