USK will do all they can to prevent rivals Newport rubber-stamping their Swalec Premier League relegation at the Athletic Ground tomorrow afternoon.

Sully sealed the title last Saturday but it was also a weekend for the underdog with the bottom pair of Usk and St Fagans enjoying away wins at Ammanford and Cardiff respectively.

Usk’s success has just delayed the inevitable but St Fagans now have a real chance of reeling in eight-placed Swansea. Usk’s win over then second-placed Ammanford was a real morale-booster and bodes well for next season.

Oliver James claimed three scalps for 47 and unbeaten contributions from Mark Tamplin (52) and Tom Baker (52) helped they to an eight-wicket success.

They will be hoping for another win over Newport, who they beat in the final of the Macey Shield.

However, the Spytty Park side want to finish as runners-up and victory would set up a last week shootout for second spot with Port Talbot Town.

They head to the Athletic Ground on the back of a 20-point haul from their drawn game with Swansea when Glamorgan batsman Gareth Rees (119) and skipper Michael Clayden (107) put on 220 for the first wicket. Bright prospect Josh Aston was the star with the ball, claiming four scalps for 47 runs.

Meanwhile, Newport have regained the initiative in the race for the second XI title after Cardiff were comprehensively beaten by St Fagans. The Spytty Park side went back to the top of the pile thanks to a six-wicket win over Swansea at St Helen’s, with seamer Harry Powell grabbing five victims for just 42
