NEWPORT’S attack will feature Ashes-winning pace bowler Simon Jones in the Swalec Premier League next year while seamer Huw Waters makes a welcome return to Usk.

All-rounder Chris Ashling will join Jones at Spytty Park and big-hitting wicket-keeper batsman Chris Cooke heads to Usk.

Waters has been given the all clear after suffering a stress fracture of his back last season and will return to play for the Monmouthshire club after they secured promotion to the top flight at the first attempt following their 2010 relegation.

Other notable Glamorgan player allocations are captain Mark Wallace sticking with Port Talbot, Ynysygerwn benefiting from ex-Newport opener Gareth Rees and former Panteg seamer John Glover while Cwmbran’s Will Bragg will feature for Bridgend.

Newport have also changed skipper with Gary Wood taking over from Mike Clayden. He is looking forward to having Jones, a key member of the England side that beat the Australian in 2005, in his attack.

He said: “Simon is an icon in the game and to see him playing for Newport next season will be a tremendous boost to our young team.”

Newport hope the 32-year-old, who played 18 Tests, can help with the development of their Glamorgan Academy pair Imran Hassan and Harry Powell and Gloucestershire prospect Cameron Herring.
