A FAMILIAR face makes a swift return to the Swalec Stadium this morning when Glamorgan host Surrey in the County Championship.

A dramatic winter at Glamorgan saw coach Matthew Maynard quit and he was followed out of the exit door by his son, Tom.

The 22-year-old signed for Surrey and the explosive batsman made a solid enough debut against Northamptonshire a fortnight ago, scoring 32 and 40.

However, he will hope to convert those starts into big knocks over the next few days when he locks horns with his former teammates.

“If someone had told me six months ago I would be playing for Surrey against Glamorgan in Cardiff, I would not have believed them,” said Maynard.

“But times and situations change. This is the hand I have been dealt and the path I have chosen.

“When I saw the fixture list and realised Surrey were playing in Cardiff in the second game, I was desperate to be involved.

“It will be a special occasion for me but will be tough as well.

“I love Glamorgan and will always look out for the boys and their results. I still have a lot of close friends in that team.

“So there will be a few emotions flying about coming back but I am looking forward to the experience.

“It is a big milestone for me, especially if I can go down there and perform well.”

Glamorgan are in fine spirits ahead of today’s game after securing a 189-run win, their first of the season, against Gloucestershire on Sunday.

Coach Matthew Mott is demanding an improvement with the bat after his side could only muster 202 in the first innings last week, a score that could have been much worse given they were reduced to 54 for six on the opening morning.

“We would like to improve our batting, put some big scores out there,” admitted Mott.

“We have to dig deep because as we have shown in the first two games that we have a bowling attack that can take 20 wickets.”

Glamorgan add former Surrey batsman Stewart Walters, spinner Robert Croft and seamer Huw Waters to the XI that beat Gloucestershire.

Glamorgan squad: A Petersen (captain), G Rees, W Bragg, M Powell, B Wright, J Allenby, M Wallace (wicket-keeper), G Wagg, J Harris, D Cosker, A Shantry, S Walters, R Croft, H Waters.
