THREE Welsh cyclists came home with medals after representing Great Britain in the UEC Elite Track European Championships in Guadeloupe last week.

Cardiff’s world champion Elinor Barker and Ciara Horne, who trains in Newport, won the women’s team pursuit title with GB teammates Katie Archibald and Laura Trott.

And Cardiff’s Owain Doull also won gold in the men’s team pursuit with Ed Clancy, Jon Dibben and Andy Tennant.

Barker, Archibald, Trott and Joanna Rowsell had set the fastest qualifying time before Horne was swapped in for Rowsell in the semi-final, with the squad beating Germany by over four seconds to earn a place in the final against Russia.

Russia started hot and were ahead of Great Britain after the first kilometre but Archibald, Barker, Horne and Trott stuck to their schedule and were back ahead after two kilometres, eventually posting 4:38.391 to take gold by almost seven seconds.

The GB men stopped the clock at 4:11.545 to claim gold by almost a second over Germany in their final.

Lewis Oliva, of Devauden, finished sixth in the men’s team sprint with Matt Crampton and Callum Skinner.

Their time of 1:01.377 was just two tenths shy of a medal ride.

Barker finished 14th in the women’s points race and in the women’s scratch race Horne and Barker were 25th and 28th respectively.

The men’s points race saw Doull disqualified by the commissaires for illegally assisting teammate Mark Christian.

Britain’s Tennant and Skinner struck gold on Saturday with Tennant winning the individual pursuit title while Skinner took the kilometre time trial crown.

And Archibald and Trott added two more golds Britain’s medal tally on the final day of competition on Sunday.

Trott retained her European omnium title in a thrilling battle with Belgium’s Jolien d’Hoore, while Archibald produced a stunning performance to take the individual pursuit title.

Trott and Archibald’s medals brought Britain’s final tally to eight; six gold, one silver and one bronze.
