POLICE believe a woman whose body was found on a main road near Royal Wootton Bassett late last night was hit by a vehicle that failed to stop.
The victim was discovered at 11pm last night lying in the Wootton Bassett bound lane of the A3012 at the junction with Stoneover Lane.
She had had received extensive head injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Sgt Craig Hardy said: ““Police are keen to trace any vehicles that were driven from the direction of Junction 16 of the M4 towards Royal Wootton Bassett that may have struck the victim on the road.
“Witnesses have described seeing large goods vehicle parked in a lay-by close to the site of this incident and we are urging the driver of this vehicle to contact Wiltshire Police as they may hold valuable information to assist with our enquiries.”
The road was closed for 8 hours. Officers from the serious collision investigation team want anyone who used the route between 10pm and 11pm to contact them on 101, extension 720 3111 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
