OXFORDSHIRE’S Olympic gold medal-winning men will go for glory in an eight this summer, it was announced yesterday.
Andy Triggs Hodge, Pete Reed and Alex Gregory memorably struck gold as part of the the men’s four at London 2012.
They will now spearhead Britain’s eight at the second World Cup regatta of the season – at last year’s Olympic venue of Eton Dorney – from June 21-23.
Oxford’s Triggs Hodge, fellow Oxford Blue Reed and Gregory, from Henley, have already competed in that boat this year, but yesterday’s announcement confirms this move is not just an experiment.
Their boat also includes Olympic bronze medallist Henley’s Will Satch, plus Tom Ransley, Dan Ritchie and cox Phelan Hill from the town’s Leander Club.
London 2012 silver medallists and Oxford Brookes alumni, brothers Richard and Peter Chambers (see video link), will team up in the lightweight men’s double scull.
Karl Hudspith, Oxford University’s victorious Boat Race president, is selected in one of three heavyweight men’s pairs.
Another Brookes duo, Scott Durant and Matthew Tarrant, are named in the four.
Among the women, Oxford’s Olivia Carnegie Brown is selected in the eight, while Fran Houghton, from Wheatley, will race in the double scull.
Wallingford RC members Brianna Stubbs, from Headington, and Eleanor Piggott team up in a lightweight double scull.
Britain’s second boat in that category includes their clubmate, Oxford’s Kathryn Twyman.
GB performance director David Tanner said: “We will have a big crowd at Eton Dorney on all three days and it will be a good opportunity to give our emerging and under 23 crews the chance to taste the intensity of World Cup racing alongside our more established and experienced stars.
“We do not expect to repeat the heights of our medal haul from 2012 – after all this is a transitional year with some top rowers taking a break or having retired. But I am sure we will give the home crowd some exciting racing and something to cheer for.”
