NEWPORT Gwent Dragons have released Fijian back row forward Netani Talei.

The 31-year-old, who is currently sidelined with a foot injury, had a year left to run on his current deal.

The strong-running number eight/blindside joined from Edinburgh in the summer of 2013 to provide competition and cover for Wales and Lions star Taulupe Faletau.

He made 20 appearances but suffered a foot injury towards the end of the season and saw the Dragons recruit former Wales and Lions forward Andy Powell.

And with plenty of other options in the back row – Lewis Evans, Nic Cudd, James Thomas and promising prospects Scott Matthews, James Benjamin, Ollie Griffiths and Harri Keddie – the region has come to an agreement to end his deal early.

Chief executive Gareth Davies said: “I would like to thank Netani for his contribution to the Dragons over the past 12 months.

“He is a dedicated rugby player and has been a great addition to the squad over the past season.

“We wish him all the best with his recovery and his future in rugby.”

When Talei is back fit he will attempt to earn a spot in Fiji’s squad for the 2015 World Cup that would see him lock horns with Wales at the Millennium Stadium.
