LYN Jones insists Newport Gwent Dragons don't need a major recruitment drive this summer – they just need luck with injury.

The Dragons are closing in on some fresh faces for next season but the director of rugby has stressed that they don't need wholesale changes despite their lowly position with only Treviso beneath them in the Guinness Pro12.

So far this season they have endured long-term injuries to wings Hallam Amos, Tom Prydie and Matthew Pewtner, centres Tyler Morgan, Jack Dixon and Pat Leach, fly-half Dorian Jones, lock Andrew Coombs and back row forwards James Thomas and Ollie Griffiths.

While director of rugby Jones will add to his squad for 2016/17, he doesn't feel they need to be as active in the transfer market as their rivals Cardiff Blues.

The men from the capital have already snapped up Wales utility back Matthew Morgan, Ulster powerhouse number eight Nick Williams and Australia prop Salesi Ma'afu while loosehead Rhys Gill is also on his way but the Dragons will focus on retention along with a smattering of new boys.

"We went through dramatic change 18 months ago, Cardiff Blues are going through that now and that is long overdue for them, and good luck to them," said Jones.

"We don't need to recruit. We just need to get players fit because Jack Dixon hasn't played a game, Tyler Morgan hasn't played a game, Hallam Amos has played two games, Taulupe Faletau has hardly played with injury and World Cup duties, Tom Prydie has played six games, Andrew Coombs hasn't played, James Thomas has barely played.

"Our recruitment probably needs to be another half a dozen physiotherapists or orthopaedic surgeons to get our best players fit and playing rugby to give us the best chance of seeing what potential we have here because it's locked at the moment on the medical bench.

"There is no need for us to recruit this and that as some other teams do. We have been through that dramatic change and need time to build and develop. You can only do that when players are on the field."

The Dragons do intend to add a few new arrivals with Jones backing up previous comments made by head coach Kingsley Jones about targeting Welsh-qualified players.
